Former SEMO football player charged with rape, kidnapping and domestic assault

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., (KBSI) — A man faces seven felony charges after investigators say he sexually assaulted, confined and physically attacked his former girlfriend Sept. 26-27, according to court documents.

Daronne Lee Wright is charged with first-degree rape, first-degree sodomy, first-degree kidnapping, two counts of second-degree domestic assault and two counts of armed criminal action.
Circuit Judge Julia M. Koester issued an arrest warrant Tuesday. The warrant lists a $100,000 cash bond.

The woman reported the alleged assaults to Southeast Missouri State University police Monday afternoon and later participated in a forensic interview with a nurse, according to a probable cause statement.

She told investigators Wright pulled her braids, struck her in the mouth and choked her during arguments about whether she was talking to another man. She reported falling and hitting her head during one encounter.

Charging documents also allege Wright sexually assaulted the woman by forcible compulsion, used a firearm during the alleged sodomy and confined her without her consent to inflict physical injury.

A separate domestic assault count alleges Wright struck her in the head with a firearm and placed it in her mouth. The armed criminal action charges are connected to the alleged sodomy and firearm assault.

Southeast Missouri State University spokesperson Tonya Wells confirmed Wright was previously a non-recruited walk-on but is no longer affiliated with the university’s football program.

Wells did not specify when his affiliation with the program ended.

Wright is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
