Fourth of July celebrations: Considerations for PTSD and safety

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo (KBSI) – As the Fourth of July holiday approaches, many individuals across the country eagerly anticipate celebrating with dazzling fireworks displays.

However, it is important to remember and support those who may be struggling with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs offers valuable suggestions to ensure an inclusive and considerate holiday for all while considering the impact of fireworks on individuals with PTSD.

To manage the expected fireworks and mitigate their effects, the following recommendations are advised:

The Department of Veterans Affairs recommends individuals with PTSD to:

  • Seek support from loved ones: Openly discuss concerns with trusted friends or family members and invite them to accompany you during celebrations for added comfort and security.
  • Prioritize self-care: Focus on self-care before attending events by ensuring adequate rest, practicing breathing techniques to manage anxiety, and limiting alcohol consumption for a more balanced emotional state.
  • Utilize earplugs or headphones: Consider using earplugs or headphones to reduce the intensity of sound triggers and provide a sense of control.
  • In the event that an individual with PTSD unexpectedly encounters distressing sounds of celebration, the following coping strategies are suggested:
  • Pause and reassure yourself: Take a moment to remind yourself of your safety, consciously countering heightened anxiety and panic.
  • Practice grounding techniques: Engage in techniques like deep breathing exercises or focusing on tangible objects in your surroundings to redirect attention away from distressing stimuli.
  • Emphasize the temporary nature of discomfort: Remind yourself that the momentary discomfort caused by fireworks will subside and draw upon your resilience to overcome challenges.

Alongside considerations for individuals with PTSD, prioritizing safety during holiday celebrations is crucial. Chris Wheeler, owner of Patriot Fireworks, shared essential tips to ensure a safe Fourth of July amidst hot temperatures:

“Staying in open areas is crucial, especially during excessive heat,” advises Wheeler. Choosing open spaces for fireworks displays reduces the risk of accidental fires, while avoiding high burn-risk areas is important.

Wheeler emphasizes preparedness by suggesting individuals:

  •  Keep a water hose or fire extinguisher within reach to respond effectively to potential fire hazards.
  •  Exercise caution and follow manufacturer’s instructions when handling fireworks to prevent accidents and injuries.

As the nation prepares for Independence Day celebrations,  a balance between enjoyment and empathy for those who may find the experience challenging due to PTSD is needed.
