FOX23/My49 blood drive with American Red Cross in Cape Girardeau
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) – FOX23 and the American Red Cross hosted a blood drive on Wednesday, July 12 in Cape Girardeau.
“We’re in a critical need for blood donations,” said Shelby Bentley with American Red Cross recruitment. ‘In the last few months, we were 50,000 donations shy from what we needed to send to hospitals. when we can’t provide what we need to provide to hospitals the people that suffer are those hospital patients.”
The American Red Cross is sending out blood donations to hospitals faster than they are coming in. More donors are needed in the month of July to prevent a blood shortage that could impact healthcare facilities around the country.
“Every donation we use for a hospital patient,” said Bentley. “Blood has a very limited shelf life of 42 days and people can donate every 56 days so it’s really important that we keep hospital shelves stocked.”
Those who came in to donate Wednesday received snacks, drinks and…
“A free $15 Visa gift card by email and they will receive a free Cardinals t-shirt as well,” said Bentley. “We appreciate everyone who comes in to donate and we just want to show that to them and say thank you.”
Just one blood donation could save up to three lives depending on the circumstance.
The blood donated throughout the day goes to helping those in need throughout the community.
FOX 23 KBSI thanks everyone who came out to donate blood during the event. 11 donors and 10 units of blood were collected.
Thank you for helping us save lives!
