BENTON, Ill., (KBSI) — Franklin Hospital will host a Lunch & Learn event focused on colorectal cancer screening on Tuesday, March 24, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The event will be held at Franklin Hospital, located at 201 Bailey Lane in Benton. Dr. Rodney Miller, chief of surgery and a member of the hospital’s medical staff, will speak about the importance of screening and answer questions from attendees.

Organizers encourage registration in advance. Participants will receive a free at-home screening test kit to return to a designated drop box in the hospital lobby during April. Test results will be mailed to patients after processing. The free testing is sponsored by the American Cancer Society and is open to the public.

Hospital officials say colorectal cancer is one of the few cancers that can be prevented through screening. The American Cancer Society recommends adults begin regular screening at age 45. Officials note most people diagnosed with colon cancer do not have a family history of the disease, though those with a close relative who has had colon cancer may face increased risk and should discuss screening with their doctor.
