WILLIAMSON COUNTY, Ill., (KBSI) — A fugitive who had evaded law enforcement for nearly five years was taken into custody Monday, according to the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies said they apprehended Devontae M. Sanders on Feb. 2, 2026, after locating him about 1:55 p.m. in the 300 block of South Fifth Street in Marion. Authorities said they had received information earlier in the day regarding Sanders’ whereabouts.

Sanders was wanted on an active arrest warrant issued by Franklin County in connection with a 2021 case involving home invasion, unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon and reckless discharge of a firearm.

According to the sheriff’s office, deputies conducted surveillance using an unmarked vehicle. When Sanders exited a building and was approached by deputies, he fled on foot, prompting a brief pursuit. Deputies issued repeated commands for him to stop before the chase ended when Sanders slipped and fell in a snow-covered field. He was taken into custody without further incident.

In addition to the outstanding felony warrant, Sanders was cited for resisting or obstructing a peace officer.

Sanders was transported to the Williamson County Jail, where he was remanded into custody.

The sheriff’s office said it remains committed to locating and apprehending fugitives and ensuring those wanted for serious crimes are brought before the court.
