Gas prices down significantly in 2023 versus 2022

Gas Prices 2023 Recap

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) – Drivers experienced some significant relief at the pump in 2023 compared to 2022.

The average price for a gallon of gas in Missouri was $3.20 per gallon for this year, which is 37 cents less than the $3.57 drivers paid on average in 2022. AAA Public Affairs Specialist Nick Chabarria said this decrease is not much of a surprise considering the record prices we saw in June 2022.

Looking ahead to 2024, Chabarria said the unpredictability of the gas market makes it difficult to forecast what could happen in the coming year.

“I think drivers are more aware of how geopolitical events around the globe can impact gas prices right here at home, so really over the last three years, we’ve seen gas prices reach both ends of the spectrum being very cheap in 2020 to record highs last year,” he said. “It’s getting tougher and tougher to say with confidence just exactly where gas prices will go, especially when we’re talking long-term.”

On average, drivers would have saved around $4.44 every time they filled up in 2023 compared to 2022.
