George Floyd remembered nationwide on fifth anniversary of his death
(KBSI) — Sunday marks five years since George Floyd was killed by a Minneapolis police officer, a moment that ignited global protests and a renewed movement for racial justice.
Across the country, events this weekend honored Floyd’s memory and called attention to the work still ahead.
In Texas, family members and supporters gathered at Floyd’s gravesite near Houston. The Rev. Al Sharpton joined them in Pearland to pay tribute.
“This is about justice,” Sharpton said. “They will always bear the pain of the loss of George. And we must always stand and respect and regard them.”
Back in Minneapolis, the Rise and Remember festival drew crowds with worship services and a moment of silence just steps from where Floyd died.
Festivalgoer Tee McClenty said she’s hopeful.
“This is very special for me. That Minneapolis, Minnesota — where the murder of George Floyd took place — that we won’t forget.”
Brooklyn Center Mayor April Graves said she believes love is stronger than hate.
“With some of the recent changes at the federal level and some of the rumors around potential pardons and issues around the consent decree, it’s like an intentional reharming of the community,” Graves said. “But that doesn’t mean that we’re going to allow it to break you.”
Five years later, Floyd’s name continues to resonate around the world — a symbol of a movement that persists, step by step, toward justice.
