Gov. Pritzker signs assault weapons ban

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (KBSI) – Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker signed the “Protect Illinois Communities Act” Tuesday evening which bans the sale and distribution of assault weapons throughout the state.

HB 5471 also bans the sale of high-capacity magazines and switches in Illinois and requires existing owners of semi-automatic riffles to register their weapons within 300 days.

The bill is effective immediately.

After signing the bill into law, Gov. Pritzker released a statement on Facebook saying ” I’m tired of living in a world where a mass shooting needs a title so you know which one we’re referring to. I just signed the Protect Illinois Communities Act, which immediately bans the sale and distribution of assault weapons, high-capacity magazines, and switches in IL. No Illinoisan should have to go through life fearing their loved one could be next in an ever-growing list of mass shooting victims. We will keep fighting to ensure that future generations only hear about massacres like Highland Park, Sandy Hook, and Uvalde in their history books.”

Illinois is now the ninth state to implement an assault weapons ban.
