JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KBSI) – Governor Mike Kehoe and the Missouri Department of Social Services announced a statewide food drive to support Missourians affected by the ongoing federal government shutdown, which continues to impact families who rely on federal nutrition programs such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
The State Team Member Food Drive will run from Nov. 3 through Dec. 12, encouraging state employees across all departments and offices to donate nonperishable food items or monetary contributions.
Donations will benefit regional food banks across Missouri through a partnership with Feeding Missouri, which will place collection barrels in several state office buildings.
“The ongoing federal shutdown has added strain and uncertainty for some of our neighbors, and local food banks will be seeing more families walk through their doors,” Kehoe said.
“Claudia and I hope that state team members will join us in volunteering, donating, and supporting their local food banks. Our team members have always shown what it means to serve with heart, and together we will show that the strength of Missouri lies in its people.”
Earlier this week, Kehoe announced an early release of $5 million in Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) funds to Missouri food banks to help meet the rising demand for food assistance.
Department of Social Services Director Jess Bax praised state employees for their generosity and community spirit.
“When challenges come our way, Missourians don’t wait for someone else to step up — we take care of each other,” Bax said.
“From organizing local drives to volunteering their time, state team members are showing the true spirit of public service.”
Feeding Missouri Executive Director Leigh Anne Haun said the collaboration will make a significant difference during a critical time.
“Feeding Missouri’s network is working tirelessly to ensure families, seniors, children, and veterans have food on the table — but the needs are far exceeding our resources,” Haun said. “This partnership reminds us that public service is about people helping people.”
All donations collected through the drive will remain in Missouri and directly support local families and communities.
