GRAVES COUNTY, Ky., (KBSI) — One person was killed and another injured in a house fire Sunday in northern Graves County, authorities said.

Emergency crews responded at about 11:20 a.m. Jan. 25 to reports of a residential fire at 12865 State Route 303, a few miles north of the Tennessee state line. Cuba Fire Department personnel responded despite nearly impassable road conditions and temperatures in the low teens.

The home was a total loss, officials said. Investigators determined that 79-year-old Garvin R. Doran and his wife, 81-year-old Faye Doran, exited the home after the fire began. Garvin Doran then reentered the residence and did not come back out. Authorities said the couple used a wood stove to heat the home.

Faye Doran was taken to Jackson Purchase Medical Center by Mayfield Graves County Ambulance Service and later transferred to Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville for further treatment. She remains in serious condition.

Firefighters battled the blaze and searched for the victim for several hours in extreme cold. The search was suspended near nightfall Sunday and resumed Monday morning. At about 12:05 p.m. Monday, firefighters, along with Graves County Coroner Brad Jones and sheriff’s deputies, located Garvin Doran’s body. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The fire and death remain under investigation by the Graves County Coroner’s Office and the Graves County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff Jon Hayden expressed condolences to the family and thanked Cuba firefighters for their efforts under harsh weather conditions.
