Graves County Sheriff’s sergeant credited with saving woman, child, dog from fire
FARMINGTON, Ky. (KBSI) – A sergeant with the Graves County Sheriff’s Office is credited with saving a woman, infant and dog from a burning home.
Sgt. Richard Edwards was on routine patrol in the Farmington area on Saturday, Febraury 3. While he was patrolling around 3:40 p.m., he saw thick, black smoke coming from a home in the 7900 block of KY 1124 near the Calloway County Line.
Sgt. Edwards approached the home and confirmed that the back of the home was on fire.
As approached the home, a male ran out of the front door and told him other people were still in the home.
Sgt. Edwards entered the home and helped a female who was still in the home evacuate an infant and the family dog.
A short time after Sgt. Edwards and the family were out of the house, the fire spread and engulfed the home.
No one was seriously injured in the fire.
The infant was treated as a precaution for minor smoke inhalation at the scene.
“We would like to commend Sgt. Edwards on his quick and selfless actions on Saturday, helping to rescue two victims from this house fire and the family pet. Excellent job Sgt. Edwards. We are all very proud to work alongside of you,” said a post on the Graves County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page.
Sgt. Edwards was assisted at the scene by Deputy Ben Doran, Deputy Chad Hall, Mayfield/Graves County Fire and Rescue, Calloway County Fire and Rescue, Mayfield/Graves County EMS, the Red Cross and West Kentucky Rural Electric Cooperative Corporation.
Several neighbors, friends and family members also stepped into help the family.
