GREENFIELD, Tenn., (KBSI) — Greenfield School has been named one of the top five “Bright Spot” schools in Tennessee for outperforming expectations in third grade reading, according to a national analysis published by The 74.

The report identifies schools where students achieve reading proficiency at rates significantly higher than predicted based on poverty levels. The analysis compares state reading assessment data with student poverty rates to determine which schools are exceeding expectations.

According to the report, Greenfield School, which has a 28% poverty rate, was projected to have 43% of third graders reading proficiently. Instead, 79% of students met or exceeded proficiency standards.

The school is currently designated as a Reward School, earned an A on the Tennessee State Report Card and holds a Level 5 growth designation, the highest growth rating issued by the state.

Principal Jamie Doster said the recognition reflects the work taking place in classrooms each day.

“Our teachers believe deeply in every child’s ability to learn and grow, and they ensure students receive the support they need, both academically and emotionally,” Doster said in a statement.

Director of Schools Jeff Cupples said the achievement highlights the district’s student-centered approach.

“This shows what’s possible when students are at the center of every decision,” Cupples said. “Greenfield’s success reflects the power of focused teaching, strong relationships and student effort.”

Third grade is considered a critical milestone in education, marking the transition from learning to read to reading to learn. Educators say strong reading skills at this stage are linked to long-term academic success.

Weakley County Schools officials said the full report, “Top 5 Schools in Each State Beating the Odds in 3rd Grade Reading,” is available through The 74.
