Hangar 9 to reopen in August under new ownership
CARBONDALE, Ill., (KBSI) — Hangar 9, a Carbondale institution, is set to reopen in August after a major revamp and change in ownership. Southern Illinois University alumni Andrew Perlmutter and Scott Moller acquired the venue from longtime owner Sally Carter, who will remain involved as a consultant.
The new owners have launched a two-phase revitalization plan. Phase 1, currently underway, focuses on enhancing the customer experience by increasing capacity, expanding entertainment offerings, and enlarging the dance floor and upstairs viewing area. The adjacent parking lot will also be transformed into an outdoor beer garden.
Phase 2, scheduled for summer 2026, includes a complete interior redesign featuring a new bar, upgraded stage, advanced lighting and sound systems, and the addition of food service and premium drink offerings.
Perlmutter and Moller bring extensive marketing expertise to the venture. Perlmutter previously served as CEO of Funko, while Moller founded Marketing Werks. For both alumni, reopening Hangar 9 is a passion project aimed at supporting SIU and the greater Carbondale community.
The venue will offer entertainment most nights, ranging from dance parties to national touring acts. Hangar 9 is expected to reopen around August 4, just ahead of the Fall 2025 semester.
