Haunted Library: A 15-Year Labor of Love
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., (KBSI)- Tucked away in a small town, Cathy Thompson’s library transforms into a chilling spectacle each Halloween, mesmerizing visitors with its eerie allure.
Thompson’s fascination with Halloween began 15 years ago with simple spider webs and spiders, gradually evolving into one of the state’s largest and most elaborate displays.
Thompson and five staff members dedicate five weeks to crafting intricate displays, sparking awe in visitors. “It’s fun to watch their faces light up as they explore,” Thompson remarks.
Patrons debate the scariest attractions: zombies, dolls, witches or ghosts. Thompson confesses, “My babies are the favorite. They freak people out.”
This year’s display introduces Wanda the Spider and a Flying Witch, alongside animated and illuminated features.
Legend has it that the building has its own spirits. Thompson shares tales of unexplained occurrences and tragic events, including the untimely deaths of the original owner’s wife and daughter.
After assuring the spirits she’d care for the building, strange happenings ceased, except for throngs of visitors drawn to her Halloween masterpiece.
People flock from Memphis and beyond to experience Thompson’s unique creation, solidifying her library’s reputation as a beloved Halloween destination.
