OBION COUNTY, Tn., (KBSI) – Hillcrest Elementary School has been named one of America’s Healthiest Schools for 2026 by the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, recognizing the school’s commitment to promoting the health and well-being of students, staff and families.
Since 2007, the national recognition program has honored 3,780 schools across the country for their efforts to create healthier learning environments and support student wellness. In 2026, 1,376 schools have received the award.
Hillcrest received recognition in three areas: supporting school health services, bolstering physical education and activity, and promoting tobacco-free schools.
The school’s work in health services includes providing routine health screenings, addressing chronic health conditions and connecting students and families with additional healthcare resources through school and community-based providers.
Hillcrest was also recognized for its commitment to quality physical education and opportunities for students to remain active throughout the school day. These efforts are designed to ensure all students, including those with special health needs, have opportunities to participate in physical activity.
In addition, the school promotes a tobacco-free environment through education about the dangers of tobacco and vaping, prevention efforts and interventions that encourage students to make healthy choices.
The recognition reflects the collaborative efforts of the entire Hillcrest school community to support students’ academic, physical and emotional well-being.
Chastity Simpson, Director of Coordinated School Health for Obion County Schools, was recognized for her leadership in spearheading the initiative. Her work has helped advance efforts to promote wellness among students and staff and build healthier school communities.
Hillcrest school nurse Mallorie Southerland also plays an important role in the school’s health initiatives. Through health screenings, management of student health needs and connections to additional resources, Southerland helps ensure students have the support they need to remain healthy, safe and ready to learn.
School leaders emphasized that the recognition represents the work of teachers, staff, students and families who contribute to a culture of wellness at Hillcrest.
By prioritizing health alongside academic achievement, Hillcrest continues to demonstrate its commitment to preparing students for success in the classroom and beyond.
The America’s Healthiest Schools recognition celebrates Hillcrest’s efforts to create an environment where students can thrive and develop healthy habits that support lifelong well-being.
