GOLCONDA, Ill. (KBSI) — A historic downtown building in Golconda fully collapsed Thursday during demolition and stabilization work tied to efforts to preserve the structure’s historic façade.

Video from the scene showed the front portion of the former Sweetwater Saloon building suddenly giving way as demolition equipment operated nearby.

The building, also known as the Young Opera House, dates back to 1887 and has long been considered one of the most recognizable historic structures in Pope County.

Earlier this year, it was announced more than $41,000 in emergency grant funding to help stabilize and preserve the deteriorating building after a partial collapse was reported.

State officials said the funding was intended to help save the historic structure while supporting nearby businesses impacted by the building’s condition.

According to previous statements from Main Street Golconda, contractors had been attempting to preserve as much of the historic façade as possible during the work.

The Sweetwater Saloon building was known throughout Southern Illinois as both a historic landmark and a longtime gathering place and music venue.

No injuries were reported following Thursday’s collapse.
