How and why Jackson, Mo., is growing
JACKSON, Mo. (KBSI) – Jackson Area Chamber of Commerce CEO Brian Gerau sums up what has allowed the city to flourish.
“We believe that Jackson is just a great place to live. Our quality of life is really second-to-none,” he said. “We’re safe. We’ve got great schools, a great chamber of commerce, so businesses are really looking to come into our area and grow.”
Businesses like Wings Etc. on Jackson Boulevard and Barrel 131 in Uptown Jackson, both of which are owned by Joe Hobbs.
Since opening his Wings Etc. location in 2013, Hobbs said he has had a front-row seat to witness how much Jackson has grown.
“We’re just glad to be here. I say it all the time. It’s a great town, great people. It’s a great region to be in, and we love it,” he said.
And barely a half mile down Jackson Boulevard from Wings Etc., an Aldi location is scheduled to open next month, which Gerau said will: “Increase our sales tax, and sales tax goes back into the city for different enhancements, so we’re really excited about that.”
Just how much has Jackson flourished in recent years? How about an 8 percent population growth since the last census and 39 percent retail sales tax growth over the last five years.
Gerau said small businesses and how the community has supported those businesses have played a crucial role in the city’s success.
“I’m very proud of the loyalty of people that live in Jackson,” he said. “They really support those small businesses, and really they support all businesses in Jackson.”
And Gerau said on top of bringing businesses to Jackson, keeping them here is just as important.
“One of the things I always hate is whenever we see a business go out or leave the area,” he said. “I take that personally, so it’s my goal that we bring business in, we don’t lose businesses, and we help them grow and reach all their goals.”
