How to dispose of your Christmas tree

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) – On average, there are about 25 million real Christmas trees sold in the United States every year. If you have one of these trees, knowing how to dispose of it properly is essential.

In Cape Girardeau, Public Works Solid Waste Superintendent Michael Tripp said you can take it to a special area at Arena Park through the end of January, but that is not the only option.

“You can schedule a special pick-up,” he said. “We’ll do them in January and February. We’ll pick up Christmas trees, and it’s $5.75 per tree. The other option is you can take it to our transfer station, and again, it’s basically $5.75 per tree when you bring it in down there.”

Tripp explained why it is so important to properly dispose of your Christmas tree.

“It can’t go into the landfill,” he said. “What happens when we pick up your Christmas tree or you drop it off, we take it to our holding area, and every year, we have a group that will come in and grind up all the limbs and brush and Christmas trees and make it into mulch.”

There are other ways you can recycle your tree, too.

“As far as the recycles, we do have some people who will ask for the Christmas trees, and they might put them in a pond or something for the fish,” Tripp said.

So, once you take off the decorations and move on from the holidays, you can do your part to make sure your tree gets to where it should.
