HS Track Coach Ryan Long from Notre Dame wins Coach of the Year Honors
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) – Ryan Long, the head coach for Notre Dame’s girls track and field team, has been named Coach of the Year by the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA). Entering his seventh season as the head Coach, Long says he couldn’t be where he is today without his dedicated coaching staff and hardworking athletes.
“I really don’t see it as a self-accomplishment at all,” Long says. “Getting to go to school here, then coach here, and work alongside my friends—it’s truly a collective achievement.”
Long, an alumni of Notre Dame, connection between his coaching staff, “This award is a reflection of what we’ve built as a group. It’s great to see the program get recognition for the work we’re doing together,” he says.
The impact of Long’s leadership goes beyond the coaching staff. Senior pole vaulter Abigail Spooler praised his dedication and ability to push athletes to their full potential.
“He really tries to get you to do your best,” Spooler says. “He sacrifices so much, missing time with his family to improve our team and facilities. We’re all so thankful for everything he does.”
For Long, the award serves as motivation to continue building on the team’s success. “Any time you receive recognition, it raises the bar. It sets expectations for our program and inspires us to work even harder,” he says.
I asked Long to describe his coaching style, which focuses on instilling life lessons in his athletes and more. “I’d like to think my style is laid-back, though some of my kids in the weight room might disagree,” he joked. “But I want them to learn work ethic, show up on time, and take life skills with them after high school.”
As the Notre Dame girls track and field program looks ahead to another season, the team is determined to make their coach proud. Spooler says. “We want to show everyone that he deserved this award. It really reflects his character and everything he puts into this program.”
Long expressed his gratitude to his staff and athletes, handing them the credit for the program’s continued success. “Our program is nothing without these guys. This award is truly a team accomplishment.”
