Human remains identified in Cape Girardeau County case; investigation still active

CAPE GIRARDEAU COUNTY, Mo. (KBSI) — The Cape Girardeau County Sheriff’s Office said human remains previously recovered have been identified as Martie “Janie” Sheffield-Cartwright, 42, of Cape Girardeau County.
Authorities said the identification was made through forensic examination with assistance from specialists and academic partners.
Officials said no additional personal details will be released out of respect for the family. The investigation remains active.
The Sheriff’s Office acknowledged assistance from Dr. Jennifer Bengtson and students with the Southeast Missouri State University Anthropology Department, Dr. Danna Cotner of Cape Girardeau, Dr. Eric S. Wilson of Cole Camp, the Bollinger County Sheriff’s Office, the SEMO Drug Task Force, Scott County SEMO Search K9, the Cape Girardeau County Coroner’s Office and the Cape Girardeau County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.
No further information will be released at this time to protect the integrity of the case, authorities said.
