Hundreds of Sikeston families receive free essentials thanks to local churches, national nonprofit
SIKESTON, Mo. (KBSI) — Hundreds of families lined up in Sikeston Wednesday to receive free food, cleaning supplies, toiletries, and even toys for their children — all part of a major community distribution effort organized by local churches and the national nonprofit Convoy of Hope.
People drove through as volunteers delivered the supplies straight to their vehicles.
Grace Bible Fellowship Pastor Kenny King said it was a blessing for many in the community and a special way for them to celebrate Juneteenth. He said they’re in an underserved community and they wanted to fill the gap wherever they could.
He said summer heat can bring additional financial burdens for people.
“I know I met someone today whose air conditioner was out in their vehicles, who was facing eviction,” King said, “and this was just an opportunity for them to have something that they otherwise maybe wouldn’t have had — something else they don’t have to worry about when they have those other things on their plate.”
Sikeston First Assembly of God Pastor John McHaffie estimates 300 to 400 families were served today. Some people waited up to an hour as cars lined up — wrapping around the block.
“We had probably about 60 workers today and they did a phenomenal job,” McHaffie said. “Watching the cars go through, all I saw was smiles and conversations and it seemed like everybody was having a good time. And it was worth the wait.”
He said it was great to be a part of a bigger community as they worked together to serve their neighbors.
“It was just a beautiful day,” he said.
