Hundreds turn out for FOX23 Back to School Drive to support local students

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI)— Hundreds of community members stopped by the Cape Girardeau Walmart Thursday to donate school supplies during FOX23’s annual Back 2 School Drive, helping local students prepare for the upcoming school year.

Throughout the afternoon, shoppers added extra school supplies to their carts before dropping off donations at the FOX23 collection area. Donations included notebooks, folders, pencils, crayons, markers and other classroom essentials that will help students head back to class prepared.

Many donors said supporting local students only required a few extra minutes during their shopping trip, but they hoped their contributions would make a lasting impact for area families.

“I feel like love is like a glue stick and kids you know just a dot not a lot goes along way. I love donating schools. Awesome stay in school,” community member Nikko Galang said.

Others said the drive is about more than collecting school supplies.

“I think it is important to give back to the children of our community so that they can know that they have support and no matter what they do and that they can count on their community and hopefully later they can come back and serve that community as well,” community member Alan Schoen said.

All donations collected during the drive will benefit students in Cape Central Public Schools.
