PLATTSMOUTH, Neb. (KLKN) – Hy-Vee earned its second Guinness World Record after creating the largest ice cream sandwich on Friday.

Hy-Vee attempted the creation due to their commitment to donate 5 million meals to help families in need across the Midwest this holiday season, according to a Hy-Vee press release.

The ice cream sandwich weighed in at 2,960 pounds and a Guinness World Records Adjudicator on-site certified the sandwich.

The creation took five hours as 30 Hy-Vee employees assembled 32 2-foot by 3-foot cookies and 182 14-pound cylinders of ice cream.

The final product measured 35 feet long, 4 feet wide and 11 inches high.

“We are thrilled to have achieved this Guinness World Record title today, but most importantly, we want to create awareness about hunger across our community,” said Jeff Quandt, district vice president in Hy-Vee’s west region.

Hiland Dairy donated the ice cream and Quandt Transport Service provided the trailer used to create the sandwich.

Hy-Vee divided up the sandwich and donated the pieces to the Food Bank of Lincoln and Food Bank for the Heartland.

Hy-Vee stores in Omaha and Lincoln plan to donate a portion of the proceeds of their 20-count mini cookie sales through the month of October to benefit local food banks, according to the press release.
