IDOT reminds drivers to plan accordingly before winter storm

(KBSI) – The Illinois Department of Transportation reminds drivers that wind and cold can cover a recently cleared road in minutes and to plan their travels accordingly.

Forecasted accumulation may not be a lot, but the bigger issues will be the wind and cold. With gusts as high as 50 mph, a road that we’ve cleared could get covered up again in minutes, particularly in rural areas.

The bitter cold will reduce the effectiveness of road salt and other chemicals that IDOT uses.

Once air temperatures get into the single digits, road treatments don’t work at all, according to IDOT.

Illinois Department of Transportation Secretary Omer Osman has an important message from IDOT’s Communication Center in Springfield.
