IDOT warns drivers to watch for pavement failures during extreme heat

FOX23 News at 9 p.m

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (KBSI) — The Illinois Department of Transportation is urging motorists to remain alert for pavement failures as dangerous heat and humidity continue across the state.

According to IDOT, prolonged periods of extreme heat can cause pavement to buckle or blow out with little warning, creating uneven road surfaces that may pose a hazard to drivers.

Maintenance crews are monitoring road conditions statewide and are prepared to make emergency repairs as pavement failures are reported.

Drivers are encouraged to report pavement failures to IDOT by calling 800-452-4368 or by contacting local law enforcement through 911.

Officials also remind motorists to slow down and move over when approaching road crews and emergency personnel working on repairs.

Anyone traveling during the heat wave is encouraged to carry extra drinking water in case they become stranded, as high temperatures can quickly lead to dehydration.
