Illinois declares end to Measles outbreak

SPRINGFIELD, Ill., (KBSI) — The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) has declared an end to the measles outbreak in the state, with no new cases reported since May 22.

A total of 10 measles cases were identified in Illinois, with eight linked cases in Southern Illinois and two unrelated cases in Cook County.

IDPH Director Dr. Sameer Vohra credited the swift response of public health officials, medical professionals, and community partners for containing the outbreak.

The outbreak occurred amid a national surge in measles cases, with 1,288 confirmed cases reported across 39 jurisdictions in 2025, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

IDPH stressed the importance of vaccination in preventing measles, with one dose of the measles/mumps/rubella (MMR) vaccine proving 93% effective and two doses 97% effective.

The department encouraged residents to ensure they and their families are up to date on all recommended vaccines.
