Illinois expands access to HIV preventive medication
SPRINGFIELD, Ill., (KBSI) — Illinois residents can now obtain HIV preventive medication directly from pharmacists without a doctor’s prescription, under a standing order issued by the Illinois Department of Public Health.
The medication, known as PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis), can reduce the risk of HIV infection through sexual transmission by up to 99% when taken as directed, according to studies.
The order, signed by IDPH Director Dr. Sameer Vohra, aims to increase access to PrEP for individuals at high risk of HIV exposure, particularly in Black and Hispanic communities, which account for more than 60% of new infections annually.
Illinois reported 1,386 new HIV diagnoses in 2024, a 9% decrease from the previous year. The state’s Getting to Zero Illinois program aims to eliminate new HIV transmissions by 2030.
The IDPH’s PrEP4IL program provides medication assistance to those in need, with over 900 new applications received last year. The new standing order is expected to further improve access to PrEP.
“IDPH is proud of our PrEP4IL program and its impact on reducing HIV rates,” Vohra said. “This standing order takes our efforts further, opening doors to access preventative treatment and dramatically reducing the risk of acquiring HIV.”
Pharmacists wishing to offer PrEP services must undergo training and follow protocols outlined in the standing order. IDPH will collect data on the utilization of this order through a reporting form.
