Illinois health officials promote safe swimming practices ahead of summer season

SPRINGFIELD, Ill., (KBSI) — As Memorial Day weekend approaches, the Illinois Department of Public Health is reminding residents to take precautions to avoid water-related risks such as drowning, disease and pool chemical injuries.

The agency is highlighting the CDC’s annual Healthy and Safe Swimming Week, which runs May 19-25 and features tips on safe practices for splash pads and other water activities.

IDPH Director Dr. Sameer Vohra encouraged Illinoisans to follow safe swimming practices, especially parents and caregivers of young children.

“Unintentional drownings are a leading cause of accidental deaths among children, and poor hygiene can also pose health risks,” Vohra said.

To reduce the risk of drowning and other injuries, IDPH recommends:

Ensuring children have swimming lessons and are closely supervised
Installing fencing around swimming pools with self-closing and self-latching gates
Wearing life jackets while boating

To prevent waterborne illnesses, IDPH suggests:

Avoiding swimming with diarrhea or vomiting
Showering before swimming
Avoiding getting water in your mouth
Checking pool inspection reports and reporting accidents

IDPH also reminds pool owners and operators to safely use pool chemicals and store them out of reach of children.

Additionally, the agency warns of unique risks associated with swimming in natural bodies of water, such as amoeba and algae.

By following these tips, Illinoisans can enjoy a safe and healthy swimming season.
