Illinois lawmakers press IHSA for clearer policy on transgender athletes

SPRINGFIELD, Ill., (KBSI) — The Illinois High School Association says it’s being put in a difficult position regarding transgender athletes’ participation in state series events.

In a statement to state senators, the IHSA said it wants to comply with the law but hasn’t taken a stance on the issue. The association noted a conflict between state and federal laws.

“The IHSA desires to comply with the law and takes no position … Given the conflict, however, we are left in an untenable position,” the statement read.

The IHSA said the issue only affects state series competitions, not regular-season games, which are governed by individual schools.

Republican state Sen. Dale Fowler criticized the IHSA’s stance, saying it lacked clarity.

“This shouldn’t be controversial. It’s about basic fairness and common sense. Female athletes deserve to compete on an even playing field,” Fowler said.

Fowler was among several senators who asked the IHSA about its policy on transgender athletic participation.
