Illinois officials warn of West Nile virus risk
SPRINGFIELD, Ill., (KBSI) — The Illinois Department of Public Health is reminding residents that mosquito season is underway, bringing with it the risk of West Nile virus.
So far this year, environmental samples in 17 counties have tested positive for the virus, although no human cases have been reported.
Last year, Illinois saw 69 confirmed human cases, including 13 deaths.
To reduce the risk of infection, health officials recommend the “Three R’s”: reduce mosquito habitats, repel mosquitoes with insect repellent and report standing water where mosquitoes can breed.
Residents can eliminate standing water around homes, wear protective clothing and apply insect repellent when outdoors.
Local health departments are working to control mosquito populations and provide education on prevention.
