Illinois reports first human case of West Nile Virus for 2025

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (KBSI) — Illinois has reported its first human case of West Nile virus this year, with a resident of southern Illinois hospitalized due to complications from the infection.

The case, confirmed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, marks the earliest onset of illness observed in Illinois since 2016.

West Nile virus has been confirmed in 19 counties so far this year, with the first positive mosquito batch found in Rockford on May 9.

In 2024, there were 69 confirmed human cases of West Nile virus, including 13 deaths, the highest number since 2018.

The Illinois Department of Public Health is urging residents to take precautions against mosquito bites, particularly those over 65 or with weakened immune systems.

“Fight the Bite” by reducing mosquito breeding sites, repelling mosquitoes with insect repellent, and reporting standing water to local health departments, said IDPH Director Dr. Sameer Vohra.
