RALEIGH, Ill., (KBSI) — Illinois State Police is investigating after one person died overnight in Raleigh.
The investigation began Wednesday night at a home on Raleigh Chapel Road north of East Maple Street. Deputies with the Saline County Sheriff’s Office initially responded to the scene before requesting assistance from Illinois State Police Division of Criminal Investigation Zone 8.
Saline County Sheriff Whipper Johnson said the sheriff’s office requested Illinois State Police assistance because of an internal conflict of interest. Johnson said the home involved in the investigation is owned by a family member of a county official who was not involved in the incident.
Authorities responded to the scene around 10 p.m. Wednesday and cleared the area Thursday morning. Officials said the investigation remains ongoing and has not been officially classified as a homicide investigation.
