SPRINGFIELD, Ill., (KBSI) — Illinois’ unemployment rate rose slightly in February while payroll jobs declined, according to the Illinois Department of Employment Security.
The unemployment rate increased to 5.0% in February, up from 4.9% in January and higher than the same time last year, based on data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Total nonfarm payrolls fell by 17,800 jobs in February, a decrease of 0.3%, bringing the total to 6.1 million jobs statewide.
The largest job losses were reported in construction, trade, transportation and utilities, and the information sector. Job gains were seen in government and other services.
Compared to a year ago, Illinois has lost nearly 20,000 jobs, with the biggest declines in trade, transportation and utilities, and professional and business services.
However, gains were reported in private education and health services, construction and other services.
State officials said the labor market continues to face challenges, though efforts remain focused on economic development and workforce support.
