MT. VERNON, Ill., (KBSI) — A Muncie, Ind., man has been arrested after authorities said he fired shots at a vehicle Friday morning while driving on Interstate 57 in Jefferson County.
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office said deputies received a 911 call around 8:30 a.m. reporting that a man in a maroon Toyota Sienna minivan had fired at another vehicle while traveling northbound near the 91-mile marker. The caller told dispatchers the suspect vehicle may have exited onto Interstate 64 eastbound at the I-57 split.
Deputies, along with officers from Mt. Vernon Police, Wayne County and Illinois State Police, responded to the area. Two deputies later spotted a vehicle matching the description traveling east on I-64 in Wayne County. A felony traffic stop was conducted on Illinois Highway 242 in Hamilton County, where three people were detained.
Investigators identified the driver, 23-year-old Mason F. Prichard of Muncie, as the suspected shooter. No injuries were reported, though one vehicle was damaged by gunfire.
The Illinois State Police assumed the lead in the investigation with assistance from sheriff’s deputies and detectives. Prichard was arrested on a charge of aggravated discharge of a firearm at an occupied vehicle and booked into jail pending a pretrial detention hearing.
Authorities said Prichard is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
