WILLIAMSON COUNTY, Ill., (KBSI) — Williamson County Sheriff’s Office conducted an inmate work detail Tuesday along Illinois Route 13 to remove litter and debris from roadways.
The work detail took place Jan. 13 along Route 13 from Skyline Drive in Marion to Illinois Route 148 near the Veterans Airport of Southern Illinois. Crews collected 1,235 pounds of trash during the cleanup, officials said.
“This program is about responsibility and restoration,” Sheriff Jeff Diederich said. “When individuals are given the opportunity to give back, the entire community benefits. These work details improve public spaces, enhance roadway safety, and reinforce accountability.”
The sheriff’s office said inmate work details are carried out by nonviolent offenders who have committed low-level offenses and have been approved to participate voluntarily. The program began Dec. 12, 2024, and has removed more than 14,000 pounds of litter from roads and public areas across Williamson County.
Motorists are notified of active work details through posted signage, and participating inmates wear bright orange clothing. All details are supervised by jail administration, with a uniformed deputy assigned to each detail to ensure traffic safety and prevent contact with the public.
Participants receive credit toward community service requirements and are given the opportunity to make a positive contribution to the community.
