Jackson County Sheriff’s Office joins ‘Click It or Ticket’ campaign

JACKSON COUNTY, Ill., (KBSI) — The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office is joining law enforcement agencies statewide in the “Click It or Ticket” campaign, a high-visibility seat belt enforcement initiative running from May 16 to May 27.

The effort coincides with the Memorial Day holiday and aims to remind drivers to buckle up.

“Seat belt use should be an automatic habit for everyone,” said Sgt. Ronald Stanton. “It’s not just safe; it’s the law.”

Illinois enacted its seat belt law in 1985. Since then, seat belt usage has increased from 15.9% to 92.4% in 2024.

Despite the progress, authorities say there’s room for improvement, particularly at night, when Illinois crash data shows higher rates of unrestrained fatalities.

Participating agencies will take a no-excuses approach to enforcement, issuing citations day and night. The campaign is funded with federal highway safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation.
