MURPHYSBORO, Ill., (KBSI) – The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a phone scam involving a caller impersonating a sheriff’s deputy and demanding money for fake arrest warrants.
According to the department, an unknown individual claiming to be “Sgt. Corey Foster” from the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office has been calling residents, telling them an arrest warrant has been issued for failing to appear in court. The caller then demands payment over the phone to clear the alleged warrant.
Officials said the scam calls appear to originate from spoofed phone numbers with local 618 area codes, making them look legitimate.
The Sheriff’s Office emphasized that it does not call citizens to demand payment and does not provide warrant information over the phone.
Residents who receive such calls are urged not to share personal information and to report the incident to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office at 618-684-2177.
