Jackson County State’s Attorney’s Office providing gun locks to promote community safety

JACKSON COUNTY, Ill. (KBSI) – The Jackson County State’s Attorney’s Office is providing gun locks to promote community safety.

Jackson County State’s Attorney Joseph A. Cervantez, announced his office is providing gun locks to promote community safety.

Cervantez encourages all families to secure guns separately from securing ammunition.

He says gun violence is the number one cause of death for children in the United States. Approximately 4.6 million children live in homes where guns are not secured. Safe storage can lower the risk for unintentional shootings by children and curb suicide attempts, according to Cervantez. Proper storage also lowers the number of guns stolen from homes and vehicles.

The Jackson County State’s Attorney’s Office purchased more than 1000 cable, gun locks through the Illinois State Police Asset Forfeiture Fund.

Upon request, the Jackson County State’s Attorney’s Office will provide gun locks to local community groups and organizations to distribute at various events.
