Jackson firefighter honored as First Responder of the Year at SEMO basketball game

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) – A Jackson firefighter received the First Responder of the Year award on Saturday, Dec. 4 during the SEMO Redhawks basketball game.

SERVPRO® of Cape Girardeau & Scott Counties hosted the contest and awarded its First Responder of the Year to Dalton Abernathy. He is a firefighter with the Jackson Fire Department. He has been with Jackson FD for three-and-a-half years and a volunteer for eight years.

Abernathy was honored for his dedication, positive attitude and work ethic. According to his nomination, he arrives arrives at the station every day 30 minutes early and ready to work with a positive attitude. He has completed multiple courses to better serve the community and region as part of the Regional Homeland Security Response Team.

“Dalton is a rare employee that every service wishes they could staff an entire department full of. He is extremely dedicated to his trade and his department,” read part of the nomination. “What he doesn’t see is how much better he makes our department every day through his passion for serving others.”

He is known for showing compassion and respect for every patient and his patients’ families while caring for their needs.

“He has an extremely strong work ethic and a passion for the Fire service as well as the other services we provide to our community,” read the nomination. “He is extremely humble, and he never asks for any recognition, because he simply feels it is just part of his job. What he doesn’t see is how much better he makes our department every day through his passion for serving others.”

SERVPRO® of Cape Girardeau & Scott Counties plans to host this contest and event annually.
