Jackson to test hundreds of fire hydrants beginning Sept. 22

JACKSON, Mo., (KBSI) — Jackson Fire Rescue will test and maintain more than 350 fire hydrants across the city beginning Tuesday, Sept. 22.

The city’s annual testing program is expected to continue through Oct. 30. Crews will work between Shawnee Street and the eastern city limits, as well as areas extending north and south to the city limits.

Jackson has more than 800 hydrants in its service area. Testing allows crews to ensure hydrants work properly and provide sufficient water flow for firefighting.

Residents may notice fire vehicles, water around hydrants, temporary discoloration or air sputtering from faucets while work is underway. Officials said the testing will not affect the safety of the water supply.

Anyone experiencing cloudy or discolored water should run water through an outside spigot or bathtub until it clears. Residents should avoid washing clothes while the water is discolored because it could cause stains.

The city requires at least 3 feet of clear space around each hydrant. Residents should remove vegetation or other obstructions that could prevent firefighters from accessing hydrants.
