CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) – Signature mocktails in support of staying sober — six Cape Girardeau businesses are partnering on the January Mocktail Journey.

The Design Bar at Roost partnered with five other businesses in Cape Girardeau on the January Mocktail Journey. All month long, each business is serving a signature non-alcoholic drink in support of Dry January.

“This is a way for people that normally wouldn’t drink or are taking a break, from consuming spirits,” Jeff Stiebel said. “It’s a chance for them to still have that social aspect, to still go out, to still have fun and still spend time with their friends.”

The Design Bar’s signature drink is called January Journey. It’s a non-alcoholic espresso mocha martini.

Stiebel said the event is also a way for small businesses to promote each other by encouraging people to try different spots in town.

“It’s good for the businesses. It’s good for the locals as well,” he said. “It’s a good support system for everyone.”

On the list of establishments is the sober bar at Goose and Gander where they specialize in non-alcoholic drinks.

“We do not have a liquor license,” Josh Green said. “Everything in the building is nonalcoholic. I have beer, wine, spirits to make your own ready to drink cocktails — whatever you need.”

Green said the signature drink they’re serving this month has some sweetness and some kick to it.

“We are doing what we call The Hamptons. It kind of channels, you know, sitting in grandma’s garden — grandma’s mint garden. So it’s non-alcoholic gin, raspberry, and then mint and thyme is kind of the big flavors there to kind of add an herbal, super fun note to it,” he said.

Dry January is a part of the overall sober movement.

“It’s a movement. It’s not a trend. It is growing rapidly,” Green said. “It’s estimated somewhere around a third of people my age don’t drink.”

He said if you’ve never tried a non-alcoholic drink, give it a try.
