Jefferson Fire District considers new firehouse to meet growing community needs

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ill., (KBSI) — Jefferson Fire Protection District #1 is exploring the possibility of building a new firehouse to better meet the growing needs of the community, district officials said.

Officials said the district’s call volume has tripled since 2000, while its service responsibilities have expanded to more than 500 square miles through mutual-aid and intergovernmental agreements. Modern emergency responses also require more advanced technical capabilities than in the past, the district said.

The district’s current headquarters was built in 1945 and has been occupied by the district since the early 1960s. Officials said the 81-year-old facility no longer meets current safety, operational or space standards.

As the district continues to grow, officials said a new facility is being evaluated to support fire and emergency services for more than 11,600 residents served by a combination of paid staff and approximately 30 volunteers.

District leaders said voters will be asked to consider the proposed investment in public safety. Community members are invited to learn more and ask questions during an open house scheduled for Jan. 21 from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at Station 1.

The district said community support is critical as it continues its mission of protecting residents throughout Jefferson County.
