Jefferson Fire Protection District responds to two large fires in 24 hours

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ill. (KBSI) – Jefferson Fire Protection District sees two structure fires in 24 hours.
According to the Jefferson Fire Protection District on December 23, 2024 at 8:44 am dispatch received a call for a trailer on fire with entrapment in the north part of Mt. Vernon. An off duty shift officer arrived with a MVPD officer to find light smoke showing from a single wide trailer. Both individuals entered through the front door to find light smoke and an occupant with mobility issues trying to exit the structure. The occupant was assisted out of the structure as Jefferson and Mt. Vernon FD engines arrived. The fire was quickly extinguished by firefighters with minimal damage to the structure. The occupant was checked by Litton Ambulance, and all additional departments that were responding were cancelled.
A second fire happened on December 24, 2024 at 3:33 am dispatch sent the full still for a reported building on fire that was fully engulfed.
Arriving Kell Assistant Chief advised of an abandoned structure fully engulfed with an occupied structure nearby.
The occupied structure was evacuated, and Jefferson fire engine quickly stopped the fire that was near the adjacent structure and began extinguishment.
Mutual aid was provided by the following departments, Kell, Webber, Wayne City, Mt. Vernon, and Litton Ambulance while Woodlawn and McLeansboro covered Jefferson station 1.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by Office of State Fire Marshal.
