Jefferson first graders visit furry friends of SEMO Pets

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) – First Grader friends of Jefferson Elementary went on an adventure to visit with furry friends of SEMO Pets.
On Monday October 28, about 90 excited first graders with Jefferson Elementary School climbed off of school buses at SEMO Pets for a long-awaited fieldtrip.
Students, and their teachers worked hard in the previous weeks to raise money and donations for SEMO Pets. Students held signs, raised money through various projects and even made treats for the animals at the shelter.
Students got to interact with puppies and cats and even play with therapy dog Frankie. Students learned about how to care for animals while experiencing the meaning of giving back to their community.
Bria Shaw is a first grader at Jefferson Elementary who shares her favorite thing about the field trip.
“I like touching the animals and making treats” says Shaw.
Another Jefferson first grader Malia Rowsley shares what her favorite animal is.
“The Dogs!” says Rowsley.
Jefferson Elementary staff presented SEMO Pets with various bags and cans of dog food, homemade treats, toys and even a check from money students raised for the shelter.
Kelli Dysinger is the Marketing Director for SEMO pets. She says this fieldtrip is not only a treat for the students but the pets as well.
“So, the pets love any kind of attention that they can get during the day, so this is very special to them too by having all the different stimulation and enrichment with the kids.”
Dysinger says they appreciate the efforts of Jefferson Elementary and are always accepting donations.
The shelter currently has 260 animals that they provide care for and need forever homes.
