JOHNSTON CITY, Ill., (KBSI) – Several children were evaluated for minor injuries after a Johnston City School District bus was struck from behind Monday morning in slick, rainy conditions on Illinois Route 37.

The Williamson County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded at about 7:25 a.m. to the crash at Foxcroft Drive. The bus, carrying about 30 students in grades K-12, was stopped to make a left turn when it was hit by a black Nissan SUV driven by Michael Redmon of Pittsburg, Illinois.

Multiple sheriff’s units, the Williamson County Fire Department, United EMS, and school officials, including Superintendent Josh Pietrantoni, responded to the scene. Authorities said several children were taken by parents or ambulance to area hospitals as a precaution.

“We are fortunate that this morning’s accident, which occurred amid challenging inclement weather conditions, resulted only in minor injuries,” Sheriff Jeff Diederich said in a statement. “I am grateful to our first responders and school personnel for their quick response to ensure the safety of the children.”

All parents and guardians of the students were notified.

Redmon was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident. The investigation is ongoing, and additional enforcement action may be taken.
