CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., (KBSI) — A Juneteenth celebration is planned for June 20 at Ivers Square, bringing the community together to honor history, culture and progress.

Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when news of emancipation reached enslaved people in Texas more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

Organizers said the event will offer an opportunity for reflection, education and celebration, highlighting the resilience and contributions of Black Americans.

The gathering will include music, cultural activities and community engagement. Residents are invited to attend and take part in the celebration.
