Kelly School District staff deliver meals to tornado-affected areas
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., (KBSI) — The kitchen staff at a local school will deliver hot meals and food boxes to tornado-affected areas today from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Those in need of assistance who are not receiving school messages can call 573-545-3541 ext. 500.
According to Kelly Superintendent Dr. Brad Kolwyck Kelly schools have been closed the past two days in order to give families time to cope and to address community needs but they did provide free childcare to any families who needed it.
Kolwyck saying he didn’t want any extra stressor’s added to students and families right now.
“The last thing I wanted students to worry about right now is their finals” says Kolwyck. “Yesterday and today were actually scheduled final days and when u talk about finals students were very nervous and stressed out about it and then I did not want them to have to worry about finals. So we canceled finals on a mandatory basis this year and made them optional on the middle school and high school level and so moving forward I just though hey let’s support our families, let’s take that burden off of them whatever they need we’re going to support them moving forward.”
: Wednesday will be the last day of school for Kelly students, but Kolwyck shares that they will continue community support in any way they can as many students as possible in the district were affected.
“In the area that was affected there’s approximately 30-40 kids that were affected that live in that area” says Kolwyck.” We have not been able to at this point evaluate the total number of students that were total losses. We do know we have a lot that were directly or indirectly affected by the tornado and so that also played a role in us not having school yesterday or today.”
Kolwyck says they will continue helping in any way they can, and any families affected by the recent tornado regardless of what school their child goes to can call the Kelly school office for help.
