Kennett man found guilty of shooting another man in 2017

KENNETT, Mo. (KBSI) – A man has been found guilty for shooting a man in 2017.
According to Dunklin County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office Johnny Lee Phillips Jr., age 46, was found guilty last week of shooting a man on November 19, 2017 at the corner of North Walnut and Washington Street in Kennett.
The police found the victim suffering from a gunshot wound, and he told responding officers that Phillips had shot him.
At trial, Dunklin County Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Ryan Dicus presented evidence that following an argument, Johnny Phillips pulled a handgun out and shot the victim in the chest.
The victim was flown by air ambulance to Regional One Medical Center in Memphis.
He survived his injuries.
Phillips was convicted after a jury trial on November 21 in Pemiscot County where a jury found him guilty of the class A felony of assault in the first degree, the unclassified felony of armed criminal action, and the class E felony of unlawful use of a weapon.
The Defendant faces in excess of a life sentence in the Department of Corrections.
The judge ordered that Phillips be held without bail until his sentencing hearing scheduled on January 13, 2025.
Phillips having a previous record played a role in his extensive sentencing.
In Pemiscot County, Missouri, he was convicted of assault in 1997, possession of a controlled substance in 1999, unlawful use of a weapon in 2008, possession of a controlled substance in 2012, and delivery of a controlled substance in 2018.
He additionally has a 2016 Dunklin County possession of a controlled substance conviction.
After the trial, Dicus stated, “Clearly this is a defendant who had no business possessing a firearm, and now he will be held accountable for shooting the victim and putting the entire community at risk”
