Kennett to begin impounding vehicles without proof of insurance starting Jan. 1

KENNETT, Mo., (KBSI) — The Kennett Police Department is notifying residents that beginning Jan. 1, 2026, officers will impound vehicles when drivers cannot provide proof of insurance, in accordance with state law and a newly adopted city policy.
Missouri law requires all motorists to maintain valid insurance and present proof upon request during traffic stops or after crashes. Under the new policy:
1. Traffic crashes
If a driver involved in a roadway accident cannot provide proof of active insurance, officers would impound the vehicle. For crashes investigated after the fact, drivers must still show proof of insurance that was valid at the time of the incident. Vehicles will remain impounded until the responsible party provides proof of insurance and pays all towing and storage fees.
2. Traffic stops
If a driver stopped for a traffic violation is unable to provide proof of insurance, officers will immediately impound the vehicle. To retrieve the vehicle, the owner must provide proof of insurance and pay all associated towing and storage fees.
The department is urging residents to share the information and ensure their insurance documentation is up to date.
