Kentucky law allows street-legal ATVs, UTVs on public roads

FRANKFORT, Ky., (KBSI) — A new Kentucky law makes it legal to drive specially equipped all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) and utility task vehicles (UTVs) on certain public roads.

The law, Senate Bill 63, requires the vehicles to meet specific safety standards and obtain a special designation.

Safety requirements include:

— Headlamps, tail lamps, brake lamps and turn signals
— A horn, muffler and rearview mirrors
— A windshield or eye protection for the operator
— A speedometer and roll bar or roll cage
— Seatbelts for multi-passenger vehicles
— Tires with at least 2/32 of an inch tread

Vehicles must pass a $25 inspection by a certified inspector to obtain the special designation.

Owners must present their title, proof of insurance and inspection form to the county clerk’s office to apply for a new title with the SLSPV designation.

A yearly renewal fee of $19.50, plus ad valorem tax, will be required. Electric SLSPVs will have an additional $63 yearly fee.
